Facility for Advanced Surgical Training (FAST)

The Anatomy of Complications Workshop live animal surgery session is held at the Centre for Advanced Surgical Training. This is a ‘walk-in walk-out’ facility for the animate-based training of health care professionals in surgical, anaesthetic and medical skills.

FAST is located in the Large Animal Facility at The University of Western Australia, Crawley campus in Perth, also housing the WA Lotteries Commission Perinatal Research Laboratories, under the direction of Professor John P Newnham.

The Manager of FAST is Dr Tim Moss who can be contacted on +61 (08) 9380 7969 or at tmoss@cyllene.uwa.edu.au

FAST is housed in the Large Animal Facility at The University of Western Australia.

The Large Animal Facility is a state of the art animal facility designed to handle domestic animals under experimental conditions including sheep, goats, pigs and emus. Within this facility are two operating theatres designed for sterile surgery and a four bay operating theatre for non-recovery surgery.

Live animal surgery session: Anatomy of Complications Workshop
At maximum capacity FAST can simultaneously provide six anaesthetized animals for surgical procedures. The AC workshop now routinely requires six ewes using the main 4 bay downstairs theatre and one of the sterile surgical theatres which can house 2 ewes comfortably.

The Anatomy of Complications Workshop is responsible for providing the specialized surgical instruments required for pelvic, gastrointestinal, urological and vascular surgery. FAST provides operation scrub suits, boots, protective gowns, masks and goggles as required. Refreshment breaks during the session are provided.

The FAST technical support team: Ilias, Tim and Adrian

Experienced personnel are available and present at all times to ensure best practice in caring for the animals, anaesthesia and the use of equipment. The Anatomy of Complications Workshop is indebted to the excellent technical support provided by the research staff at the Large Animal Facility.

The ethical requirement for the surgical activities of the Anatomy of Complications Workshop is a critical issue and the responsibility is fully met by FAST. All procedures performed as part of a course held at FAST must have the full approval of the UWA Animal Experimentation Ethics Committee.

CTEC is housed at the Crawley Campus of the University of Western Australia. It is a purpose built facility for medical and surgical skills education and training. It is in the same building as the School of Anatomy and Human Biology. This proximity allows for a remarkable cross fertilization of ideas and educational models.

This facility houses the Hill International & Surgical Workshop, St John of God Interactive Seminar Room, The Centre for Anaesthesia Skills and Medical Simulation, RACS lecture theatre and meeting rooms, research laboratories and virtual reality simulation equipment. The overall CTEC mission statement is: “ To provide medical and surgical training and performance assessment in the promotion of the highest standards of healthcare at the state, national and international level.”

The first day of the Anatomy of Complications Workshop is held at CTEC. The Anatomy lecture is held in the St John of God Interactive Seminar room, adjacent to the Hill International Medical and Surgical Workshop. The Hill workshop is the venue for remainder of the morning Anatomy session including cadaver dissection and examination of prosected anatomical specimens. The afternoon session continues in the Hill Surgical Workshop using porcine material to assist in the learning of various surgical procedures as detailed in the program.

We are indebted to the excellent technical support which enables the Anatomy of Complications Workshop to reach it’s objectives.

King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women (KEMH)

The case presentation session of the AC workshop is held in the Geoff Bird Clinical Staff Lounge at King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women which is located at the Centre for Women’s Health, 374 Bagot Road, Subiaco, Perth, Western Australia.

The old and the new: King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women

King Edward Memorial Hospital for Women is the tertiary referral hospital for obstetrics, gynaecology and neonatology in Western Australia. The hospital houses the School of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the University of Western Australia and is responsible for much of the undergraduate teaching in this discipline.

The hospital has active departments of Maternal Fetal Medicine, Ultrasound, Gynaecology, Urogynaecology, Gynaecologic Oncology and Neonatology. It is the hub of the RANZCOG Integrated Training Program for trainees in obstetrics and gynaecology. The hospital is actively involved in the training of subspecialty trainees to meet the certification requirements of the Royal Australian & New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

The Urogynaecology Unit has four consultants in Urogynaecology and has been responsible for the training of one subspecialty trainee. At present the unit is devoting the training opportunities to the RANZCOG specialist trainees so that they may become proficient in basic reconstructive pelvic floor and urinary incontinence surgery, which should be in the domain of the practising specialist in O&G.

The Western Australian Gynaecologic Cancer Service has been involved in subspecialty training since 1990, with Fellows coming from Australia as part of the CGO training program and internationally as part of the DGO training program of the RANZCOG. The Fellows spend one year on the service during which time they are exposed to the full range of gynaecologic cancer surgery and multidisciplinary care. There are 3 certified gynaecologic oncologists on the service.

The Maternal Fetal Medicine service has been involved in subspecialty training for several years. This discipline has a very strong research base. There is an active collaboration with the Women and Infants Research Foundation (WIRF) housed at Carson House in the grounds of the hospital and the Perinatal Research Laboratories situated at the Large Animal Facility at the UWA Campus. The service has two certified MFM subspecialists and has an active subspecialty training program.

The Anatomy of Complications Workshop secretariat is housed within the Obstetric & Gynaecology Clinical Care Unit at the hospital.
