The Anatomy of Complications Workshop aims to improve the performance of specialist obstetricians and gynaecologists in the area of ‘prevention and management of complications in obstetric and gynaecological surgery’.
This two day programme is an intensive, hands-on, practical learning experience conducted in state-of-the-art facilities, in Perth, Western Australia.
This workshop was conceived and developed by Ian Hammond and John Taylor when they recognized that their specialist colleagues in obstetrics and gynaecology were not always comfortable in dealing with inadvertent injury to urological, gastrointestinal and major vascular structures. They believe that a thorough understanding of the surgical anatomy of the pelvis underpins successful and safe clinical practice and this theme is fostered throughout the workshop.
An integrated two day programme was developed and with the help of Professor Paul McMenamin they were able to develop and include an innovative anatomy module.
The first workshop was held in October 2000 with 8 participants and 4 facilitators. By May 2006 36 workshops have been conducted, with over 450 participants. There are now 16 participants attending each workshop, with at least 8 facilitators from a national and international clinical and academic faculty. In addition to the standard workshop (for O&G specialists), we have developed and run workshops specifically catering for trainees and specialists in Gynaecologic Oncology and Urology. Please visit the Workshop Programmes page for further information.
The workshop is held in Perth, Western Australia on a Friday and Saturday. Participants are encouraged to be in Perth no later than Thursday evening so that they are ‘wide awake’ and ready to go to work on Friday morning! The workshop concludes with an informal dinner at a local Italian restaurant on the Saturday evening and participants are able to return home on ‘midnight flights’ or on Sunday morning. For those with a little free time the delights of Western Australia are ripe for exploration.
This is a non-profit workshop and the conveners and facilitators are not remunerated. The cost of the workshop covers the material expenses for the use of the various facilities, equipment, and refreshments. Any surplus monies are used to fund other training programs, educational activities and the Taylor-Hammond Research Scholarship (see specific section for further information).
Ian, John and Paul are the lead facilitators of this learning experience. We invite you to explore this website and hope that this workshop may be of some help to you in your clinical practice.
We look forward to seeing you in Perth.
Ian Hammond, John Taylor,
and Paul McMenamin.
